If you don’t want to create these particular directories you don’t have to. Just plug your external HDD in as usual and go to either music or video or anything (it doesn’t matter) and press triangle on the device (which the PS3 will claim doesn’t have any of the files in the section you’ve selected); once you’ve pressed triangle go to ‘display all’ and you can navigate through the disk this way. I’ve found the PS3 Slim will play virtually all of my music and video straight out of the box.

Thanks I’ve reformatted my usb drive and I’m now watching movies thanks to your simple sugjestion. Network shares are a problem for most

Actually, the PS3 will not recognize network shares, unless they use the DLNA standard. So, a NAS with a standard SMB or NFS share will not work if you want to play the media on the PS3. You would have to use a commercial or open source DLNA-compatible media player. A good list of them can be found here:

I’ve used MythTV with some success.
